A Note about "Notes..."

Alessandra, it pains me to hear that the recovery process is so devishly slow this time around...Sometimes you luck out and others you gut out...this must be one of the latter. Here's a possible antidote: About three months ago I spotted an article entitled "Notes to Soothe the Savage Cells" in the NYTimes written by editor Dana Jennings who--you guessed it--is battling prostate cancer and sharing it on a blog. He writes that you can read plenty about cancer itself but not necessarily about how to live with it. He goes on to present a playlist of "music to have cancer by." Even though the recordings are on the blue side, he says he listens "with optimism and healing" in mind. I picked out 5 from the 10 songs, hoping that you might find some of the music comforting in different ways, depending on your mood.
1) "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley. He apparently lets go of a huge sigh before he sings which Jennings feels is a this-world-is-too-much-to-bear-sigh and yet even if it's painful, he/we go on to shout "Hallelujah." 2) "Hurt" by Johnny Cash whose voice is "a glorious wreck, all rasps and croaks." If you're feeling that way, maybe it wouldn't hurt to immerse in it. 3) "The Weight" by The Band and The Staple Singers. You'll light up at this one because you know we're all with you and singing "put [your] load right on me." 4) "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis. Jennings says when he feels that way on those sleepless nights, the album's "muted and modal compositions are perfect for those pinot noir hours." 5) "Soul Man" by Sam and Dave. He writes that when cancer seems to claim your body, all you want to do is "rock and sway" as Sam and Dave preach.
P.S. He also recommends vintage slapstick like "The Little Rascals" and "The Three Stooges."
Be better today and better yet tomorrow, Danda. You must be happy that Vicki is back today--yippee!!! Hugs and love to you all. Chrissy
